opening word ?

Up till now clicking on an icon for a winword document would open the document in word, as you would expect.
Now, with no intervention from me clicking on a document icon, opens word, but not the document !
Anyone have any ideas on what has happened, or what I can do to bring it back to normal

Try this. On your desktop, right click on My Computer, then click on Explore.
Click on Tools, Folder options, File types.
Select DOC Microsoft Word document and then click on Advanced.
You should see a list such as New, Open, Print, Printto. Double click on Open.

The application should say "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\WINWORD.EXE" /n or something similar, depending on where you installed Office.
DDE should be checked and the DDE message should be [REM _DDE_Direct][FileOpen("%1")].
If that last bit is missing or different it might explain your problem.
Application should say Winword and Topic should be System.
