Opening Word

J

Jimmy Gardner

I made a post, but it is on page 4, and I didn't know how
to "bump" it, so I'm sorry for making another post. But
here is my problem.
When I had Office '02, Wordwould open, and then there
would immediately be an error message, saying it needed
to be debuged, and it would close. This happened
everytime I opened it. Then I got Office '03, and Word
worked fine (by the way, all other Office programs open
just fine). But one day, I was working on a document,
and I got that debug message, and it closed. That
happened maybe 10 times, and then it stopped. But now,
instead of being open and staying open, Word now
immediately shuts down when I open it. When I posted
this, Terry (I believe) directed me to
http://www.mvps.org/word/FAQs/AppErrors/ProbsOpeningWord.h
tm I looked at the website, and it doesn't seem to help
me very much. On that website:
1 doesn't apply (I don't run that version of Word). I
tried 2.a., but nothing happens when I do it (2.a. is
winword.exe /a). 2.b. is deleting the data key. When I
follow the link, it says deleting the data key will help
when "my menus and toolbars are missing and won't come
back, some of the options on Word's built-in dialogs are
permenently greyed out, Word doesn't retain settings,
some of the tabs look wonky, or Word opens slowly". None
of htese apply to me. 2.c. says "another possibility is
that you have a network printer driver that is not
installed on your hard disk but is set at your default
printer". My default printer isn't on a network, so this
doesn't apply. 2.d. deals with Nortan Anti-Virus, which
I don't have. I have Symantec (its not the same thing,
is it?), so that doesn't apply. 3 deals with Word opening
slowly... that's not what's happening. 4 deals with an
error message, but Word doesn't crash. Mine is the other
way around, there is no error message, but it immediately
closes. As you can see, I really have no idea what to
do... I don't feel that any of these apply to me. Do you
have any other suggestions? I really need Word for
school, and I would like it working again as soon as
possible. Anyway, I really appreciate your help, and
your time. And I'm sorry about the length of the
message... I just figured I'd try to get you as filled
in as possible...

(by the way, I tried to email you, Terry, but I got a
message saying the message couldn't be delivered)

Symantec is the maker of Norton Anti-Virus. If you have any Symantec
product, this could well be the cause of your problems.

I can't seem to figured out how to disable the Word
protection through Symantec. The directions tell me to
open it, and go to options, but there is no selection for
options. The instructions are for Norton, and I don't
have Norton.

I'm having the same problem. I hope someone can come up
with a solution.

I seem to have found a temporary workaround however. I
found that if I use another "user account", everything
worked fine. I even tried creating a new user account
(winXP logon) and it worked as well. This might get you
through until we find the what's wrong.

Right now I'm trying to find what in my user account has
changed to keep it from starting.

Good luck. I'll be checking this forum to see if anyone
has a workable fix. BTW, I'm using Word2003 as well. It
crashes immediately and theprescribed fixes don't work for
me either.
