Opening Word97 in XP or 2K

When opening a Word 97 document from the explorer, word
often starts very slow or says the document is already in
use. Click ignore and the document opens normally.

Office 97 SR2a + WinXP with the latest updates.

It sounds like the file association needs to be recreated. Go to
Start/Run and run the following:

winword /r

Note that there is a space before the forward slash.
