Opening wordperfect file

Hi - I'm a new user of Word 2000. I am trying to open a WordPerfect 8 file
(my resume). However, if I try to open it, I get a bunch of gobblygook. If
I copy the text and paste into Word, I get the written words, but they are
all mixed up and a total mess. Shouldn't Word 2000 convert a WordPerfect 8
file? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
