Opening Workbook resets calculation to automatic from manual etc

When I open an Excel workbook the option calculation 'manual' (my standard
setting) resets to 'automatic'. Subsequently the processing in the workbook
slows down progressively until it becomes hopelessly slow. In particular line
inserts/deletions are notably slow. I have uninstalled Excel (Excel 2003) and
reinstalled it and updated at the office update website; this makes no
difference to the problem.
Any ideas?
In despair.

I now notice that it only happens when I am in one user so my guess is that
it is not an office but some kind of external problem. I at least have a way
of avoiding the problem even if it worries me not a little that it happens at
all.
Dsepite this does anyone have any ideas why it happens? I have decent
anti-virus and anti spyware etc.

This is a setting that excel picks up from the first workbook opened in that
session.

So if you open excel and with book1 active, change calculation to manual (just
to make sure), then open your real workbook, it should open with calculation set
for manual.
