Openning the same document twice in Word and Excel

When trying to open a word or excel document from a
network drive or a local drive it opens one copy and tries
to open another copy of the same file showing the
following error:
[A document with the same 'jonesd time16.xls' is already
open. You cannot open two documents with the same name,
even if the documents are in different folders. To open
the second document, either close the document that's
currently open, or rename one of the documents.]
We're running office97 suite on windows NT 4.0 SP6a.

Have anyone seen the same error before?
