Opens with vertical split. How stop

A

I mistakenly hit some key combination and caused a vertical split. I can
eliminate it, in fact I have to, by doing a window/remove split.

How can stop Word from opening with this vertical split?

The left column is an index.

This is not Document Map; I can understand why you thought that.

This vertical pane gets eliminated by using [window][remove split]

It sounds like Document Map ... but there isn't any "vertical split"
command, is there???

The left column is an index.

So, how are you getting a vertical split? Unless you're typing in
Chinese, what would be its purpose? When I click the "Split" button, I
get a horizontal line that moves up and down until I click where I
want it to be, and the button changes to "Remove Split."

An index sounds like Document Map, Thumbnails, or perhaps a table of
contents in a frame. Or wait: Could this be a task pane on the left? Some
documents have "template help" task panes. Or, if you're just opening Word,
could it be the Getting Started task pane?

I had a finger fault and hit some combination of keys by mistake. I don't
know what that combination was.

Hi, Suzanne,

It is a collection of thumbnails in a vertical stack, 1 for each page in the
document.

I followed up on your implicit suggestion, found out about Task Pane in Help
and went into Tools / Options / View and turned off "Sartup Task Pane" with
great hopes.

Alas, even with that unchecked I still get this vertical pane.

You picked up the wrong suggestion -- you said yourself that the extra column
contains "thumbnails". Open the View menu and click the Thumbnails item to turn
it off. The key combination is Alt+V, B.

For anyone else who has a similar display in Word 2007, the Thumbnails item
there is a checkbox in the Show/Hide group of the View ribbon.

If you'd said "thumbnails" in the first place, you'd have had an
answer right away.
