One of my users recently had a problem with the outlook new message
notification. Basically, he would get a small pop up error when he
clicked on the semi-transparent new message notifier window. The error
only said "the operation failed" with an OK button and the error title
bar was "Microsoft Office Outlook".
The only thing I could find on this was to disable the notification,
which was not desireable to the user. Some odd things I noticed was
that occassionally, there were be 2 envelops in the system tray
indicating new mail, and the error also happened in Outlook Web Access
2003.
I realised the problem in this case was 2 copies of outlook running. I
noticed that when signed out of OWA and with Outlook 2003 shut down,
the new mail notification messages were still appearing. When I
checked the task manager, I saw OUTLOOK.EXE running when I knew I had
shut it off. This also explains the two new mail icons in the systray.
Killing off the extra copy fixed all my problems. I've seen several
posts realted to this problem but none with this information. I hope
this helps someone.
