Operation Failed

I have seen other posts on this problem, but as of yet I have not found a
workable solution.

I am running Outlook 2003 on Exchange Server 2003. One certain e-mails, I
will try to open an attachment. The first time, the attachment will open just
fine. However, if I try to open the same attachment during the same Outlook
session, I get an error that says "the operation failed". Oddly, if I
right-click and save the attachment it gives me the same error, but the file
still shows up in the location I attempted to save to. I cannot open the
file, however, because it gives me the same "operation failed error" that
outlook gives. This happens with all different file types (though primarily
with attached messages) and from internal and external addresses.

I have attempted a repair with no luck. I have rebuilt the profile, and I
have completely removed the Office 2003 Suite and reloaded, but the same
problem continues to occur. If I forward the same messages to other users,
they are able to open the same attachments multiple times without any
problems.

The current work-around: Initially, I had to close outlook and re-open to
view an attachment again. I now have a folder called 'test' in my inbox. If I
move the message into the test folder, I am able to open the message as well
as the attachment. I still get the error message if I try to open (or save)
the attachment again. If I move the message back to the Inbox, I am able to
open the attachment once again, but only on the first try.

Further information on the problem.

This is a brand new system. It is running Trend Micro Officescan, which has
not caused similar problems on any other machines (of about 250) in the
company.

Bumping this message in hopes that someone has found an answer. I have a
user running Outlook 2002 on Exchange Server 2003 who is having the exact
same problem. Attachments (primarily .msg attachments) open once, then the
user receives "The Operation Failed" message.

I've cleaned the OLK temporary files folder to no effect. Ideas, anyone?

I have an update to this issue which, while it didn't solve my problem, might
help someone else. Workshare, who makes DeltaView and other products, has
reported a bug in their program prior to Workshare 4.5 build 8411.124 that
causes this Operation Failed message when opening embedded attachments in
Outlook for the second time. Below is the link to their knowledgebase
article.

I'm still looking for a solution for my particular issue, though, so if
anyone has any ideas, I'd love to hear them...

Follow-up question:

Does everyone who is having this problem by chance have Adobe Acrobat 8
Professional installed?

I too am experiencing the same issue. I will continue to try to find a result
outside of this website but if anyone out there finds a fix please post it.

Oh and BTW, yes, my user that is having that issue does have Acrobat 8
installed.

I have Acrobat 8 Standard running on our machines which are exhibiting
the same symptoms as described above. My only solution to-date is to
modify the installation of Acrobat (add/remove programs) and uninstall
the PDF creator option for Outlook. Since it was so problematic, I
went ahead and disabled all Office add-ins... so far, so good. No
word from Adobe, however... and we are running the latest patches on
all as of 5-23-07.

I've reported this to Adobe as a potential bug, but have received no response
as yet. Of course, uninstalling Adobe Professional fixes the error, but it's
not really an option for my users.

The first patch to Acrobat 8.0 was released a week or so ago, but did
nothing to correct the Outlook error.

I'll post an update when (if?) I get a response from Adobe regarding my bug
report.

do they need the pdf addin in outlook? that has been problematic for several
versions. it can be disabled without affecting the overall usage of acrobat.

I am also experiencing the same problem with Adobe Acrobat Standard 8.0.
Currently have 5-7 users using Acrobat Standard 8.0 all of whom are
experiencing the problem.

Running XP Pro SP2/Office 2002.

I also reported the problem to Adobe Tech Support (today) who told me no one
else had reported this problem, but that they would look into it. I have also
tried posting on the Adobe User Forum but got no replies.

I have found the problem mainly occurs when trying to open another email
which has been forwarded as an attachment.

I will try disabling the Outlook add-ins for Acrobat, although I am not sure
that this will be acceptable to the users.

I have been dealing with Adobe Technical Support on this issue. Please see
the email below:

Dear Sir,

If you can look at the Exchange account in OL and see if there is an Classic
offline mode ( or something similar) then try that as a workaround this would
be similar to OL2K03's cached mode, it will still leave the mails on the
server, but make a working copy on the local harddrive, the behaviour has
been reported and logged as a bug. Can't say when this will be fixed but see
if this workaround works for you and keep a look out for the next update in
case it is something that are addressed in the next update.

I haven't gotten around to trying the temp fix mentioned above, as have
gotten aaround the problem by removing the Outlook plugin for Acrobat (see
earlier posts on this thread for details).
