I have seen other posts on this problem, but as of yet I have not found a
workable solution.
I am running Outlook 2003 on Exchange Server 2003. One certain e-mails, I
will try to open an attachment. The first time, the attachment will open just
fine. However, if I try to open the same attachment during the same Outlook
session, I get an error that says "the operation failed". Oddly, if I
right-click and save the attachment it gives me the same error, but the file
still shows up in the location I attempted to save to. I cannot open the
file, however, because it gives me the same "operation failed error" that
outlook gives. This happens with all different file types (though primarily
with attached messages) and from internal and external addresses.
I have attempted a repair with no luck. I have rebuilt the profile, and I
have completely removed the Office 2003 Suite and reloaded, but the same
problem continues to occur. If I forward the same messages to other users,
they are able to open the same attachments multiple times without any
problems.
The current work-around: Initially, I had to close outlook and re-open to
view an attachment again. I now have a folder called 'test' in my inbox. If I
move the message into the test folder, I am able to open the message as well
as the attachment. I still get the error message if I try to open (or save)
the attachment again. If I move the message back to the Inbox, I am able to
open the attachment once again, but only on the first try.
