Everytime I open word I have to wait for "Optimizing font performance"

You can't...
My bet is that you are using a font management software like Suitcase
for instance. The app changes the active fonts on a regular basis. Every
time you launch Word, the app sees that the Font environment is
different and rebuilds the cache. THe only option is not to use a font
management tool :-\

Office has always done this to me, but usually only on the first time I've
run Office after the last computer reboot. I don't reboot very often, so I
don't see it too often. YMMV.

If you get that even though you don;t use a Font Management software, I
would suspect that your font cache is corrupted then. You can trash it
(it's in ~/Library/Preferences/Microsoft) to let it be rebuilt properly,
but you shouldn't see that under these conditions.

Good advice, which I've tried to no avail. This issue has got plenty of
thread-time in the past and I am not attempting to dredge it back up. I
think the issue had to do with fonts being duplicated and/or deleted from
the default required set. I've also checked this laboriously with no joy.

Honestly it isn't that big of deal to wait a few seconds, so I try to just
take a deep breath and not gripe. ;-)
