Optimizing the allocation of ressources

Hi ,
I am currently seeting up a project with microsoft Project and I have an
issue with the ressources. The problem is the following. I have a number
limited of ressources: technicians and machines. The purpose is to schedule
tests in my department. Each test needs to respect a logical order between
each tasks but also needs the availability of ressources. For the moment, I
schedule manually the tests and try not to overallocate the ressources (with
the help of the function "level workload"). But I have to schedule many tests
in a limited time and it is a painfull job. I think that I should use
Microsoft Project Server but my boss would like to know if it is worth it to
buy it or not. I think it is. Give me some advices please !!!

I truly doubt that Project Server will provide any assistance here as it
also does not automate the scheduling of your work. Scheduling is up to
you.

Project Server is really a tool for teams of people to work on the
information and data associated with a project. Project will do the
computations and level out the work for you based on the model you input.

Perhaps what you need to think about is to build a model of your
activities that is simpler requiring less input, or perhaps figure out a
way to automate the creation of a play by using Project's VBA
capablities. Again, Project won't figure this out. You have to figure
that out. But my hunch is that it is "figure-outable".

Hi,

Project Server will not add much function in this problem indeed. OTOH,
systematic use of Resource Leveling will give you a solution. Just paln teh
tasks asap with their resoruces then use resource leveling to shift them.

Feedback?
