Option to have either footnotes or endnotes start with a number?

I sometimes use endnotes, other times footnotes--both signified by Arabic
numerals, and am constantly switching the last selected option to the other
type. Is there any way to get Word to automatically make whatever I use first
(either footnotes or endnotes) to use arabic numerals? Any macro or some such
option?

Footnotes use arabic numerals by default; you can make endnotes use arabic
numerals by default by changing the number format in Normal.dot. You can
insert a footnote using the default format with Ctrl+Alt+F, an endnote with
Ctrl+Alt+D.

Great. Thanks--for the hint to save it to normal.dot, as well as the shortcut
for th endnote. I've been using Ctr-Alt+F for footnotes--didn't realize D
would do it for Endnotes.

Yes, I find Alt+Ctrl+D quite difficult to remember--and I never have figured
out what genius suggested that people want to use lowercase roman numerals
for endnotes!

They most likely figured that if you were to use both endnotes and footnotes
in the same doc, you woulnd't want them using the same numbering scheme--true
enough, but this is a rather unlikely scenario. The one I am in (using one
only, but always want Arabic numerals for both) is probably much more common.
Oh well.

I sometimes use endnotes for source documentation and footnotes for content,
in which case I use the *†‡ series for the footnotes.
