I am trying to find the best way to address the issue of Word 2003 SP3
blocking documents created in earlier versions of Word.
As far as I can tell, there are really 2 issues here:
1. The one addressed in KB922849 where you get this error - "You are
attempting to open a file that was created in an earlier version of Microsoft
Office. This file type is blocked from opening in this version by your
registry policy setting". I have been able to resolve this by 2 Registry
edits -
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Word\Security\FileOpenBlock]
"FilesBeforeVersion"=dword:00000000
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Word\Security\FileSaveBlock]
"FilesBeforeVersion"=dword:00000000
At this point all I seem to be able to do is create a Reg file for users to
import. I would like to use the Office 2003, SP3 ADM template for Word. The
problem is that there is a "Files before version" setting for File Open
Block, but not for File Save Block. I would like to know if anyone does have
a solution for using Administrative Templates to fix this within Group
Policy. I have tried just the "Files before version" setting for File Open
Block but it did not solve the problem. That's no surprise since directly
editing the Registry to fix the problem requires both FileOpenBlock and
FileSaveBlock to be edited, from my experience.
2. The other problem is when you get a File Conversion box asking you to
select the encoding that makes the document readable. At first I thought
this was a completely different problem, such as a bad attachment or MIME
issue, but I have seen at least one post here that seems to suggest it is
related to SP3. Could someone confirm that?
KB934181, besides being a security update, supposedly solves problem #1. I
assume that fix is part of SP3, which is kind of ironic, since apparently
something else in SP3 causes the problem all over again.
Thanks for any help on these issues.
