Order by Union Query

I have a form with 2 date fields (date and deferred date) and I would like to
be able to cycle through the records in order of the latest date, whichever
of these 2 fields it appears in. I have been able to create a union query to
produce the latest date for each record, but I can't seem to use this as a
criteria for ordering the records. Can anyone help?
