Order of captions

I’m using Word 2003 and I’m having problems getting the captions in the order
I want them in. I’m pasting images from other Word documents and to get them
in the desired position I format the picture layout to be in front of the
text. If I’ve already created the caption when I change the layout the
caption disappears behind the image (of course). If I instead select the
picture and then add captions via Insert, Reference, Caption, the caption is
created in a text box that aligns well with the picture but then I’m unable
to control the order of the caption numbers. I tried turning the AutoCaption
on and off for bitmap images, moving the text boxes and grouping them with
the pictures but none of these things were successful. Any ideas?

Captions, whether Auto or not, do not like being with a In Front of Text
picture.
As you have seen the caption tends to disappear under the image - that is by
definition that the text will be under a "IFOT" picture.
Have you tried using a borderless table, with the image in the cell as "In
Line With Text". You can Insert a caption by creating as usual and cut/paste
into the cell.
The cell can then be moved as required.
One benefit of using a table cell, instead of a textbox, is that the caption
will be updated when using F9 and when creating a new caption.
Hope this helps
