Ordering list horizontally

One can make an ordered list going down the page. Is there a way that
one could make the ordering of the list go first from left to right
and then down and left to right again? For example,

a. b.

c. d.

One can make an ordered list going down the page. Is there a way that
one could make the ordering of the list go first from left to right
and then down and left to right again? For example,

a. b.

c. d.

Setting the format for two columns and then inserting a continuous
section break after every second entry should work but it seems
awfully labor intensive. Especially if you ever insert a new list
element near the top.
