ordinates (1st, 2nd, 3rd) don't autocorrect to supserscripts

I recently changed my language settings in Windows XP and word to work for
both German and English. However, after switching back to English, I can't
get the autocorrect features to work correctly. Spell check works, the
language is set to English in the Tools -> Language -> Set Language box, and
the "Change ordinates to superscript" in the Tools -> AutoCorrect Options and
"Autocorrect" tab is set correctly. It seems to work correct in some parts
of the document some of the time, but the behavior is erratic. It is an
extreme annoyance and I guess I have really taken this feature for granted
now that it is not working right.

Superscripting of ordinals is language dependent. If the language at the
point of typing is English then English rules apply (1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc.).
if the language at the point of typing is German then German rules apply. I
don't speak German but I believe they do not normally superscript such
abbreviations.
