In the version of OrgChart used by PowerPoint 2003 (unlike the version used
by 2000), you can not delete the top most position or create a co-top
position. It is assumed (yeah I know the old saying) that there must be one
top position in any organization.
Now, having said that, there are ways to fool OrgChart into doing what you
want.
If you use OrgChart 2.0 from PowerPoint 2000 you can simply delete the top
position or add a co worker and re-direct the connector line. You will also
need to change the connector for a subordinate to connect to the middle of
the line between the top level boxes. All in all, deleting the boss is the
simplest solution, but only available in this older version of OrgChart
If you use the OrgChart-like function in PowerPoint 2003, then you are
actually inserting a 'Drawing' object of the OrgChart type that has
auto-layout selected by default. If you are trying to change the basic
structure of the Org-chart, this selection will undo you changes faster than
you can make them, so make sure that you a) turn it off and b) do not even
think about turning it on for the briefest of moments or it will reek havoc
on your organization.
You can display dual-headed organizations in an OrgChart Drawing object
using one of 2 methods.
Method 1:
Hide the real boss under a box and just show the people that actually work.
I've working in places where this is closer to the real OrgChart than was
comfortable, but we can use the technique to create your image.
1) Create an OrgChart and pretend the topmost level isn't there.
2) Fill in everything else, make it pretty and,
3) As a last step, add a box that matches the background of the slide
over top of the boss position.
With some positional tweaking, no one will suspect that the boss position
was ever there.
Method 2:
Create a co-worker to the boss and pretend it is the boss's equal.
Strangely enough, this is also a real-life organizational structure I have
worked under. Create a new OrgChart and delete all the positions but the
boss and a subordinate. Turn off auto-layout and move the two boxes to the
same level. Select the connector and reinsert it to the sides of the shapes
instead of top/bottom. Now add subordinates (do not select the real boss
position to add subordinates, use the usurper bosses's box to build off of)
and manually position them. You may also need to adjust the connector
insertion for these subordinates.
Hope this helps/makes you smile while facing adversity/validates your
frustration,
