OT? PhotoEditor. Propietary association, changing?

I don't know if this is right ng. PhotoEditor is installed through
office so hoping someone can help me.

I have associated GIFs with MSIE. All references point to this
correctly. However, once I installed PhotoEditor, now it opens them
and I can find no reference in file types where it's doing this. I
know this is often the case, but usu. in the program itself, we can
edit the associations that it's set to that overwrites any Windows
reference. I can't find anything in PhotoEditor to modify, though.
Was wondering how I can do this so that Windows' reference to MSIE
will take precedence and will not get overwritten.

I have always installed Irfanview but this installation around, don't
want to install it as I basically only ever used it for GIFs (since it
supports animation). If I can get this association problem resolved,
then I won't install it and see if I can live with one program less
(always trying to keep # of programs I use down as it can get out of
hand very easily).

Thanks.

Have you tried the right-click on a GIF - "Open With..." to set MSIE as the
owner again? Click the default option as well.

Yes. Also, settings appear just fine in FILE TYPES and via
ContextEdit. To all intents and purposes, this _should_ work - but it
doesn't. When this is the case with others apps, have been able to go
and change via the options within the app itself and that has fixed
the problem. I can't find such a screen in PhotoEditor so despite all
evidence to the contrary in that it's not supposed to open certain
formats, it does.

Perhaps a reg edit but I'm not sure which keys to delete. I know this
is possible way since I wrest RTF control away from Word every time I
do a reinstall by deleting two keys in registry. THEN the "open with"
option works when re-setting WordPad to open RTF. Until then, it
doesn't. Was hoping wouldn't have to do that for this situation as
the less fiddling I have to do, the better, but if I have no choice,
will delete keys if I must.

What can be done with PhotoEditor since it doesn't allow access to
control what file types it will open? This installation around, I'm
not installing Irfanview which has always taken care of this problem
for me in the past. Just going to use MSIE since Irfanview I only
ever use so animated GIFs can play. Am trying to cut down on apps i
use and this process would get rid of one.

Thanks.

Okay guys. No-one is answering and I've had the problem for so long.
I don't want to install Irfanview. I think I can live without it now.

So since no-one has answered I'm assuming it can't be done.

So can someone tell me pls the registry keys to delete so that OPEN
WITH will then work, pls?

That's what I have to do re Word and RTF to get RTF away from it.
There are 2 items that I must delete. So just need the key(s)
necessary to do that same for Photo Editor re GIF file type format.

Thank you, much appreciated!

Okay. No onis answering at all and really need to know how to do
this. Since there is no way that I can see through Photo Editors
interface itself, going to have to go the trickier route of deleting
actual registry keys like I do with Word for RTF. But I don't know
what they are for Photo Editor and it would be a mistake to try and go
in and figure it out myself when I don't know what I'm doing.

Can someone tell me where in registry I can find Photo Editor's
entries for opening up GIFs. Don't know if it's the same for this
situation as Word/RTF but for this there are 2 entries I must delete.
What are they for Photo Editor for GIF, pls????

Thank you!

This does not appear to be an Office question but an operating system
question.
Assuming a Windows 9x, Me or XP operating then the key will be:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.gif
This has nothing to do with Photo Editor.
You can trace the assocation from that key to find what Photo Editor
does if you wish to. (Sorry, I don't have Photo Editor installed)

Ah, didn't realize that. Since it's on the Office disk thought this
would cover it.

Oh yeah??!! <vbg> I'm still very, very shaky re the registry. I'll
take a look but only if I recognize exactly what I'm used to with Word
and RTF will I touch anything. Bad news when a newbie starts messing
around with what s/he doesn't understand fully. (Here's hoping it's
straightfoward! <fingers crossed>.)
