OT sort in newsgroups like this!

Hi. Apologies for OT, but someone here will probably know what to do. I've
just read an (as usual) excellent post by Suzanne, referring to a new
Microsoft KB article on registries. I inadvertently went on and then wanted
to return to print it. Now in Outlook (XP) I first clicked on one of
Suzanne's postings and then the 'from' header, which would normally (W98)
bring all her postings together. It didn't and the postings were re-arranged
but in a seemingly random manner. Then I clicked on the 'sent' header which
would normally arrange all the postings in date order. That didn't work
either, the postings being rearranged in seemingly a random order. Last I
clicked on the subject error, which would normally arrange postings in
alphabetical order. You guessed it... What am I doing wrong? Or are these
known bugs?

Okay, if you're using Outlook, then you're presumably talking about Outlook
Express, which I also use. Except when sorting on subject line (that is, if
you want to sort by date or sender), you need to ungroup the threads first:
View | Current View | Group Messages by Conversation. (Don't forget to
reinstate this when you're done searching.)

And of course, that did it! I looked for a non-existent manual first.
Manuals that you can read in bed and give real info are few and far between
these days. On the other hand they manage to make a six-page manual about my
new toaster!

At my rough calculation Suzanne you've saved me about 20 hours so far!

Suzanne S. Barnhill

And five pages of that six-page manual will be safety precautions required
by OSHA, right? Telling you not to use the toaster in the tub, for example.

Absolutely!

So over your side of the big pond, you too are suffering the great 'dumb
everything down to the lowest common denominator' plague that we are seeing
over here!

I'm beginning to get really fed up with the government treating everyone
like brainless idiots. We had a Health & Safety inspection at work recently.
They couldn't find anything wrong except that our lavatories had 'Gents' and
'Ladies' written on the doors. Would you believe that we MUST have EU
standard pictograms because we are all too dumb to read. Even the disabled
cubicle has to have a pictogram of a wheel chair.

Am I becoming a grumpy old man or is there a conspiracy?

What I like is the requirement of braille signage at drivethrough windows.

Yes. The image of someone driving up wearing dark specs and leaning out to
grope for the braille is highly amusing.

We have a public loo near us in a building designed by the architect as a
'statement' rather with any practicality in mind. There are icons on the loo
doors that purport to be the symbols for male and female. However, they are
distorted to be stylish to the extent that people habitually go in the wrong
door. In passing, I just hate the expression 'dumb' to mean stupid. Most
unfair to dumb (ie voiceless) people. Not grumbling at you -- I know it's
American general usage, but still horrible IMO.

Rather like the occasional instruction inside a package saying things like
'On no account open this package unless you agree to all licencing

Yes you are quite right about 'dumb'. It is most unfortunate that words are
often 'wordnapped' for new meanings - gay and dumb being two good examples.
However, it is now politically incorrect to use the word dumb to describe
the hard of speaking, likewise deaf for the hard of hearing. I don't think I
have much influence on these unnecessary changes though!
