OT virus propagation

Is it safe to assume that any "bug fixes," "security updates," etc.,
purportedly sent as .exe files from "Microsoft Corporation," however
well they imitate MS graphics, are bogus and must be sent to the Spam
folder immediately for deletion?

(Sending them to the Spam folder, as opposed to simply deleting them,
supposedly alerts the email program to consider similar items to be
spam.)

Absolutely correct. Microsoft does not send any updates by email. You get
them from Microsoft Update, either manually or automatically. If you request
a specific hotfix, you'll be informed of where to download it.
