"Other projects and commitments" in Resource Usage view

I'm struggling again and could do with some help. I'm using Project 2007 and
use resource levelling. In project 2003 I got adept at working out what I'd
done wrong if my levelling didn't work out the way I wanted (priority levels,
not having all the projects open that a resource was working on etc. etc.).
However with project 2007 all my normal checks aren't picking up why I'm
getting this particular issue.

I have a resource working on a project. We have three other plans in which
all of this resource's tasks have been completed in the past. This shouldn't
have an effect on the levelling so normally I wouldn't bother opening these
projects. However my resource's assignments are shooting way out to January
next year. When I look at the resource usage the "Other projects and
commitments" looks really, really wierd. The Actual Work and the Remaining
Work equal each other and the percentage work complete is 0% both at the top
level and for each of the unopened projects when I unroll!??! In the right
hand side of the screen there is work planned up to the end of January for
the "Summary of Other projects and commitments" (!) but not for each of the
unopened projects.

Going back into the past the Actual Work and Work do match for the unopened
projects, which is correct. The sum of the Actual Work is rolling up into
the "Other projects and commitments" correctly but the Work isn't.

When I open one of these other projects it shows correctly that there is no
work remaining for this resource.

We're using SP1 and our IT services have assured me that uploading the very
latest hotfix (May 8th for project server and whatever date it was for
project) that all the previous post SP1 hotfixes are automatically included.

Any ideas? All four projects were originally on project server 2003 and
project server 2007 was then upgraded about a month ago.

In the future, please post your Project Server 2007 questions in the
microsoft.public.project.server newsgroup, as this newsgroup is dedicated to
the Microsoft Project desktop application only. To solve your problem with
leveling, you will need to do the following:

1. Exit Project Professional 2007 and relaunch the software.
2. In the Login dialog, deselect the "Load summary resource assignments"
option and click OK.
3. Open each of the projects in which the resource is assigned tasks.
4. Apply the Resource Usage view and select the resource.
5. Level the selected resource's overallocations.

Hope this helps.

Apologies - for posting on the wrong board - I did think hard about which one
and thought it was project professional so thought it was the desk top
application.

The steps you outline work well so thank you very much.

Just out of curiosity - are the odd figures I get when I "Load summary
resource assignments" a "feature" of Microsoft Project or do you think
there's something gone wrong with our project server with respect to these
projects?

Thanks,

Joanne

They are definitely a "feature." :) You must actually have all of those
projects open to see the correct numbers. Hope this helps.

Thank you - at least it's not me going mad!

You are way too funny, my friend! When Gary and I were writing in the
Project Server 2007 books, I thought I was going to lose MY mind! :)
