Other uses for the Org chart

I am a novice, however the project I have been given appears to fit well into the Org chart format. I want to use the Org chart capability to link to an Excel ss. I like being able to define a parent for a field and I need to have the fields filled with other text, not name, reports to, title, etc
I would use Project for this assignment, however, Project is not widely distributed in the company and Viso is
Can any one help? I do not want to resort to building a tree one branch at a time
