Ouline Numbering duplicate names?

I have an outline numbering scheme that uses several styles. Occasionally I
do something that removes one of the styles from the scheme accidentally.
When I go to reassign the style I open the particular outline number box,
make the change, but when I go to accept it I get a message that the name is
already in use. Well, of yes, I know it is in use, I just want to modify it.
Nope, have to have a new name. What am I missing? I don't want to end up
with 20 outline schemes that are essentially the same.

Ahhh. I was not making my modifications from the level 1 style. This
explains much.
