out of memory, can not open or save files

Hi,

I created a new workbook, entered some data and tried to save it but
could not. I get an error message that " Microsoft Excel cannot open
or save any more documents because there is not enough available
memory or disk space"

I am able to open and save existing excel workbooks. I just can not
save a new workbook. I also can not open a second new workbook, though
I can open the first one.

According to activity monitor, I have 1.15 GB free of ram and Get Info
says I have 175 GB of free HD space.

I am running Excel 11.5.2 on OS X 10.4.11.

I just updated MS Office 2004 last night to the latest version.. I
suspect something corrupted Excel last night during or because of the
update.

Any ideas on what might be the cause or how to get past this.

Doesn't sound like update corruption to me. What does the finder say about
hard disk space? Where is the file you are trying to open? Did you repair
permissions after the update? Are there multiple user accounts on the
machine? Are you sure you have write permission on the remaining disk space?

As I indicated in the initial post, Finder says I have 175 GB of free
HD space.

This only happens with new workbooks not with existing files. So it is
not a file I am trying to open but rather one I am trying to save.
Opening an exisitng file and modifying it and saving it do not appear
to be problematic.

I have not tried repairing permissions yet.

There are two user accounts though I set up the other one for repair
purposes only. So technically, two users, functionally only one user
account is in use.

Yes I have write permission on the disk.

Just wanted to follow-up that I did repair permissions and it did not
change the problem behavior.

Does the problem happen with both user accounts?

Does the problem happen with both user accounts?

No apparently it does not. I logged into the other account and was
able to open and save a new workbook. So the issue seems to be with
just my account. And only with new workbooks.

Is there a template for the blank workbook that might have become
corrupted? I know Word as Normal.dot. Is there an Excel equivalent?

No, there is not really an Excel equivalent. If you have not made your own
template, Excel uses an internal default. Since it is a configuration issue,
not an office issue, I suggest you either migrate to the new account, or
determine how the accounts differ.

How is it a configuration issue? It worked fine prior to this last
update. It seems much more likely that the issue is with the internal
default workbook since the problem only occurs with new workbooks.

The other account had never even been used prior to testing excel last
night. The account you suggest I give up has been in use for almost
two years without issue.

I guess I will just try reinstalling Office.

Well some more information based on my solution attempts.\

The problem was more pervasive than just Excel. I found I was
receiving similar though not exact messages from word.

Tried to uninstall and reinstall Office. This did not solve it, though
now I get an additional error about could not load Microsoft Framework
Library.
