I have set up a spreadsheet in Excel to keep track of high school band booster money (seventy members), and am trying to data merge the file into word to create individual account statements. There are five worksheets in the Excel file but I'm trying to merge just the first worksheet whose totals are linked to the rest of the sheets. When attempting the Data Merge, I am getting error messages that tell me that "Word was unable to open the data source" followed by "there is not enough memory or disk space to convert this document". I've got plenty of disk space (50 gigs) and memory (4gigs) so these might be false error messages. I had created a test version of this spreadsheet which imported into word fine but at that point hadn't entered much of the data. The test file will still import without problem. I can't find any obvious problems with the Excel file but am not very familiar with spreadsheets. Does anyone have any ideas about what may be causing the problem? Thanks, Reid McCallister

After I posted the merge issue, I created a new Excel file with five blank worksheets and copied and pasted the data from the problem file into the new one. Happy to report that the new file merged into Word without problems and I am able to generate individual statements. Still don't know what caused the problem and why the workaround fixed it. If anyone out there has a thought on this, please post. Thanks, Reid McCallister

Sadly, it's a known bug. We are waiting on a Service Release from Microsoft
to fix it. I do not know of any work-around other than the one you found.
The service release is currently in testing, and will be released as soon as
it passes.
