In addition to creating destructive mail loops. A friend works for a
company that allow(ed) - changed since the incident - replies and forward to
the Internet.
Well, a senior staff person had setup a mail rule to forward ALL mail to an
Internet Mail address, either Yahoo or Hotmail. I forget which. Then he
went on a month's vacation to Europe or somewhere abroad without Internet
access on a regular basis.
What the manager forgot to do while on vacation was to CHECK his mail on a
regular basis. The mailbox filled up, sent back a message including the
original forwarded message to the Exchange box, which promptly forwarded the
mail back to the ISP who sent the Mailbox Full message, appended to the
original message and the first Mailbox full message. This happened for each
message that he received - he receives a lot of mail on a daily basis.
(this also included his Out of Office Messages to boot)
By the time that the admins caught what was going on, the Mailbox full
messages, replete with original messages, and containing more Mailbox full
messages with the originals, some of them were over 303 mb each. The
Exchange server was brought to its knees and a half day production was lost
tracking this down.
Bottom line, do not allow automatic replies and forwards to the internet
except on a proven as needed basis.

| Be aware that sending out-of-office messages to the world at large is a
| really bad idea. Aside from the security risks inherent in informing
| every spammer and cracker in the world that you're away, a
| misconfiguration in someone's mail system could result in your annoying
| people you really don't want to annoy, such as customers. The effects can
| be really bad if you're subscribed to any mailing lists.
