Outbox problem after adding a gmail acct

I have added a gmail acct but couldn't get it to sync. I tried to send an
email using gmail and the mail got into the outbox. Since it couldn't sync,
mail stayed in outbox. But when I click on Outbox, nothing is there but
there's a [2] right besides Outbox. How can I delete it? What can I do?

Have you set your Gmail smtp server EXACTLY as the setup on Gmail settings
says?

Yes, exactly on the instruction, including manually configuring the server
port numbers 995 and 465.

What am I doing wrong?

I guess I have 2 issues:
1. I can't get gmail to work
2. email sent from gmail which now resides in outbox cannot be removed,
outbox is actually empty but has a [2] besides it.

I tried to follow the steps again and here's what I have from Test Account
Settings...

Tasks:
Establish network connection COMPLETED
Find outgoing mail server COMPLETED
Find incoming mail server COMPLETED
Log onto incoming mail server FAILED
Send test e-mail message FAILED

Errors:
Log onto incoming mail server (POP3): Outlook could not connect to the
incoming mail server (POP3). The problem could be your SSL or port settings
for the incoming servers...

Send test e-mail message: Outlook could not connect to the outgoing mail
server (SMTP). The problem could be your SSL... (same thing)

What am I doing wrong?

have you logged on to your GMail account in your web browser, gone to
Settings, and then Forwarding and POP and TOLD it you want to use POP
access?

Yes, I selected it, clicked on save changes and it went back to inbox and it
says "Your preferences have been saved."
