For information about how to set up the numbering, see:
How to create numbered headings or outline numbering in your Microsoft Word
document
http://www.ShaunaKelly.com/word/numbering/OutlineNumbering.html

If you create a template to hold your numbering scheme, you can use that
template as the basis for new documents (using File > New) and the new
documents will then inherit your numbering scheme. To do that, see:

Creating a Template - The Basics (Part I)

THANK YOU so much.
u r my favority person today!!!
i evidently didn't have the 'Previous Level Number' selected correctly as I
went down the 5 levels originally.... going back thru the steps corrected the
error.
it had been driving me CRAZY.
I have often set the indent info in the paragraph attribute box, so good to
know NOT to do that and everything should run smooooooother.
probably true for bulleted and numbered lists too, correct?

thank u again!

You're welcome. Most of the credit should however go to Shauna.
