Outline level changes

I have a Word 2003 and a problem with outlining.

I have a(rather long) document that looks just OK on save. When I
reopen the document (and sometimes in the middle of changes), some of
the text gets promoted to Level 1. I can fix outline through setting
the paragraph to Body text, but the behaviour repeats on reload.

Is there a workaround or am I just stupid to use a very new version?

Are you using the Document Map? At least in some versions
of Word this feature might assign outline levels to
paragraphs more or less at random. (I believe the pattern
is that paragraphs that "look like" headings, that is,
that consist of short lines of text, get affected more
frequently than other types of paragraphs.)
