Outline levels went bad

On a large document I am typing into word (800 pages), several common
paragraphs in the document
are getting an outline level where none was marked. This results in
unwanted entries in the outline,
and the generated table of contents. This was only observed after
extensive editing. I have changed
all of the effected paragraphs one by one, had the document back in
working order, only to find that
it is again wrong the next time I open the same document. There
appears to be a bug that is causing
whole styles to be incorrectly indicated as having an outline level.

Has anyone encountered this, and found a fix? Thank you.

Good info. Sorry to see that the document map is not quite workable,
having that side by side with the
doc was one of the coolest features of word. Outline does not appear
to be able to present itself the
same way as the map does.

I should probally add a note, this bug or feature or whatever was
encountered
with Office 2007. I mention that because the good articles you
reference
say the problem got fixed with Word 2003. Looks like it got unfixed.
It is, exactly as the articles say. Non-header and non-list syles are
getting
the outline level set. I have been able to reset them all, I click the
bad entry
in the document map, then click the style that is highlighted, then
click
"select all instances", then turn the outline level back to body text.

After fixing all of the bad entries, everything is ok in both the
document and
the doc map, but saving the doc and reopening it adds back all of the
erroneous entries again. So I guess what is being said by the articles
is
that anytime docmap starts up, it marks up all of those non-header
entries.

Other than the fact the docmap is messed up (its pretty darn useful
when it
works), the main impact is that these bad entries end up in the TOC,
as
the articles say.

Anyways, I thought I would add that detail for the record.

Well, I find myself needing to add yet one (hopefully last) note.
I downloaded and applied SP1 to my Office 2007, and I just
tried the save and restore again, and this time, the document
map came up without adding the erroneous entries. Obviously
I need to put some time in to call that a fix (it went for days
without the SP1 and was fine before yesterday),

What you may not know is that DocMap is part of AutoFormat so that when you
open the DocMap, it will go through the document and any paragraph that
looks like it should be a Heading will be assigned as heading. As long as
you are using styles correctly it should not be happening any more.

have automatic headings disabled as well as "Define styles based on your
formatting."

Seems like the removed the automatic headings option from Word 2007.
Hopefully that means it is off
