Outline numbered List Style won't update

Hi
I am using Word 2003 SP3.
I have set up a template that includes an outline numbered List style. Each
list level links to a style, a-la-Shauna Kelley, so that internal lists will
restart appropriately - the restarts are always triggered by a higher level
style.
The documents that the template is applied to are rtf documents created as
interim output from another application (AuthorIT). I have worked around the
primitive understanding of Word numbering in this output, and now have
everything working fine, with the right styles being applied in all the right
places. There is one last niggling problem, however.
Two headings simply refuse to update to the correct number when the template
is applied to the document. They will update if I apply a different style,
then re-apply the correct style. But Automatically update document styles
from the attached template doesn't seem to work.
I have checked that the named list style being assigned to each paragraph is
correct for all relevant styles throughout the document (by running a macro,
after conversion, that displays the list style assigned to each numbered list
). The offending headings don't seem to have any other style quirks that make
them any different to all the others others that update quite happily. I have
checked Reveal Formatting and complared headings and preceding numberinf etc.
to check this.
Is there a reliable way to ensure that the numbering for all paragraphs is
refreshed/updated, so that I don't have to update headings manually?I want to
use the template for many similar outputsts, so I can't afford the rime to be
manually fiddling with each one.
Is there a macro that can be used to reliably update numbering? If so, is
there a sample on a web page somewhere that I could look at and adapt?
If anyone could point me to a possible solution, I would really appreciate it.

"Automatically udate document styles" is not 100% reliable with numbered
styles, as you have seen. Is there a chance you could do it the other way
around--create the document from a template and then insert the contents? I
realize that limitations in AuthorIT (an application that I know nothing
about) might prevent you from trying that approach.
