Outline Numbered Woes

I'm having a heck of a time with outline numbering lately. The most recent
problem is that it does not persist, or does not appear to persist when I
save my document. If I turn on outline numbering and get numbers for
headings and sub-headings, save the document, exit, reload Word, and reload
the document the numbers do not appear.

Has anyone else encountered this problem, and know of a fix?

First, make sure that the "Automatically update document styles"
option in Tools | Templates and Add-Ins is cleared. Then, set up
numbering as described at
