That's great news, Jean.
The List Type 3 or 4 doesn't matter, as long as it's consistent
throughout.
Next step, you need to tell us the following details:
1) Do these documents have a table of contents? If so . . .
* Which numbering levels are captured in the TOC?
* Do the headings end with a period followed by a hidden paragraph,
with text sometimes on the same line and sometimes on the line below?
Examples:
1. Specifications. The following specifications . . .
or . . .
1. Specifications.
The following specifications . . .
* Or do the headings end with a paragraph mark, with text always
following on the line below?

The following specifications . . .
2) For each numbering level, we have to know:
* Font attributes (if any) of the number and the text that follows
it; and
* Exact position of number relative to left margin.
Examples:
Level 1: 1. Specifications. The following specifications . . .
Number pos: on left margin. Has heading for TOC.
Number bold. Heading bold and underlined.
Level 2: 1.2 Widget Measurements. Widgets shall be measured . . .
Number pos: 0.5 inches from margin. Has heading for
TOC.
Number bold. Heading bold and underlined.
Level 3: 1.1.1 Other factors that may effect the . . .
Number pos: 1 inch from margin. No heading.
No formatting for number or text that follows.
Level 4: 1.1.1.1 Still other factors may effect the . . .
Number pos: 1.5 inches from margin. No heading.
No formatting for number or text that follows.
3) If you haven't done so already, please visit
http://www.ShaunaKelly.com/word/numbering/OutlineNumbering.html
Shauna's website will explain why Word's built-in Heading styles 1-9
are preferred for outline numbering. She also shows you how to set
them up, but don't worry about that because we can do it in VBA.
The important thing is that YOU NEED A *DIFFERENT* HEADING STYLE FOR
EACH LEVEL in order to have full control over your outline numbering.
Your problem, I'm guessing, came about because you apparently had only
*one* style linked to a list template, and somehow that list template
loses its settings for levels higher than 1 when switching over to XP.
When you apply a different Heading style to each level, you will still
be able to promote/demote levels with Tab/Shift Tab.
If all goes well, VBA should be able to convert the whole numbering
scheme in, say, 5 - 15 seconds per doc.
When you reply, please be as precise as possible and draw lots of
little pictures like you see above. - Bruce
