Outline Numbering - heaqder level 3 won't work!

Hi,
I'm almost giving up. I'm writing my dissertation and spent hours on this
problem and also tried Shauna Kelly without any success.
I'm using Word 2003 and XP Pro.

I want my headers to look like this:

1 Text
2 Text
2.1 Text
2.1.1 Text
2.1.2 Text
2.1.2.1 Text
2.1.2.2 Text
etc

but I go

1 Text
2 Text
2.1 Text
1.1.1 Text Here at level 3 the problem starts and continues downwards.
The first number changes!!!
2.1.1. Text
2.1.1.1 Text
3.1.1.1 Text

Can anyone help!
Thanks

Hi Perl

This problem occurs if you put the cursor in a Heading 3 paragraph and then
try to adjust the numbering scheme. You must always start with the cursor in
a Heading 1 paragraph. Then adjust the numbering scheme according to the
steps listed at
http://www.ShaunaKelly.com/word/numbering/OutlineNumbering.html.

When you get to Level 3, make sure it is using the same ListNum field list
name as the other levels, and delete everything in the Number Format box and
re-create it.

Hope this helps.

Hi Shauna (and others),

unfortunately, this doesn't work either. I've checked the ListNum field -
it's same for all levels. Is it possible to reset the scheme? How do you
(re-)create a level in the Number Format box. Is there a figure with
explanaitions somewhere?

Delete everything in the "Number format" box, then click on Level 1 in the
"Previous level number" box, type a period, click on Level 2, type a period,
then select 1, 2, 3 from the "Number style" box and type a final period.
