"outline numbering" of equation numbers flush right ?

Bruce

Hi,

I'm trying to create automated "outline numbering" numbers
that will appear flush right beside text on their left.

Specifically, the purpose is to automate numbering of
equations in technical reports. The traditional style for
numbering equations is to place the equation at the left
and a sequential number in parentheses flush right.

I'd like to link the equation number automatically to the
chapter number, and I'd like the number to keep track of
successive numbering within each chapter
(e.g., "1.1," "1.2," "1.3," etc.)

This kind of numbering is easy to accomplish via "outline
numbering" so long as the number is to appear to the LEFT
of the body text. However, I can't figure out how to get
automated outline numbers to appear to the RIGHT of the
text.

I'm thinking a solution might be possible using fields and
field codes.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Bruce

Instead of using outline numbering, you may have to use a SEQ field or a
LISTNUM field that incorporates the chapter number. If you're doing a lot of
work with equations, you might look at Design Science's MathType application
(of which Equation Editor is a cut-down version), as I believe it provides
for automatic equation numbering in the format you require. Design Science
offers a free 30-day trial of MathType. If you do not purchase MathType
within the 30-day evaluation period, MathType will go into MathType Lite
mode. In this mode, MathType works much like Equation Editor but, as an
added bonus, you will continue to have access to the full set of MathType
fonts and symbols. For more information, see

Thanks, Suzanne.

I'll check into SEQ and LISTNUM fields.

Re the MathType program...I'll check into that, too, but
we have to produce our final reports in MS Word, so I have
to find a way to autonumber these equations within MS
Word, if at all.

Any specific suggestions about how to use SEQ or LISTNUM
to accomplish flush right sequential second level
numbering linked to chapter numbers (e.g., 1.1, 1.2, 1.3,
etc.)?

The problem with captions is that you cannot force them to use the (1.1)
format that most hard-core equation creators use.

MathType works within Word. The equations it creates will be usable in any
version of Word (with or without MathType), though they won't be editable
unless MathType is installed.

Hi Suzanne,

Actually, I think I figured out how to use Caption to
create (1.1) formatted equation numbering.

Actually, I created a macro that inserts a caption (Word's
built-in feature inserts it this way: "Equation 1.1"), and
then the remainder of the macro strips out the
word "Equation," places parentheses around the caption
fields, inserts a right-aligned tab, then inserts a tab
space so the field sits flush right, and then drops the
cursor back at the beginning of the line ready for the
equation picture (or text) to be placed.

So, with a simple keyboard shortcut, I have an auto-
numbered line linked to chapter numbers, ready for an
equation! Pretty cool!

Thanks to all for all the great advice.

Hi Margaret,

Thanks for the info re captions, STYLEREF, and SEQ. I had
been playing with the caption feature just as you
submitted this.

Here's the solution I came up with:

I created a macro that inserts a caption (Word's built-in
feature inserts it this way: "Equation 1.1"), and then the
remainder of the macro strips out the word "Equation,"
places parentheses around the caption fields, inserts a
right-aligned tab, then inserts a tab space so the field
sits flush right, and then drops the cursor back at the
beginning of the line ready for the equation picture (or
text) to be placed.

So, with a simple keyboard shortcut, I have an auto-
numbered line, with the numbers sitting flush right,
linked to chapter numbers, ready for an equation! Pretty
cool!

: )

Thanks for your advice and help!
