Outline Numbering Problems

D

Devonshire

I'm trying to type up an outline and I'm finding a number of challenges that
I could use some help with. (Outline numbering format was applied to
everything).

Issue 1:
When I hit return to create a new line, Word reverts back to the "Normal"
style; i.e. no more numbering. Its supposed to continue the numbering system
when you hit return with the next number in the sequence right? How do I keep
it in the number format, outline?

Issue 2:
In my outline, After I have more than one or two indented sentences. it
inserts an oddly placed page break that I can't delete after the first
heading. Example:

I. First heading
(page break)

A. 3lkfkjg
B. klvbv
C. klnvvjoigf4

Issue 3:
If I change the style format so that the text wraps with a hanging indent,
it will not persist. As soon as I hit return for another line, all of those
heading styles revert back to the default format with no hanging indent (the
text no longer lines up....)

Any brilliant insights are appreaciated!

If you created an outline based on heading styles, this probably explains
all your problems.

1. The "Style for following paragraph" for all heading styles is Normal, so
when you press Enter at the end of a Heading 1 paragraph, the next paragraph
is Normal.

2. Headings 1-4 are formatted as "Keep with next." So if you build an
outline with nothing but heading styles, you don't give Word an opportunity
to insert a page break until (a) the page is full and it has to force a
break or (b) you format a paragraph as something other than Heading 1, 2, 3,
or 4 (say Heading 5 or Normal).

If you are creating an outline in the classical sense (that is, every
paragraph will be numbered rather than just numbered headings with following
text), it is probably more satisfactory to apply numbering to the List
Number series of styles (Level 1 = List Number, Level 2 = List Number 2, and
so on). These styles should be linked to the outline levels as described at
http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/numbering/OutlineNumbering.html.

Finally, when you have applied numbering to a style, the left, first-line,
and hanging indents are governed by the settings in Format | Bullets and
Numbering. These settings override those set in Format | Paragraph or via
the ruler.
