Outline numbering, restart and continue unavailable.

When I go into the middle of a outlined list, sometimes
item number five resets itself to be item 1. My list goes
like this: 1,2,3,4,1,2, etc. I go into Format, bullets and
numbering, into the outline I am using, but the restart
and/or continue are greyed out. What am I doing wrong?
This happens a lot. I do know that the previous person
messed up the numbering system.

Pat,

Do you have tracked changes that aren't being displayed. If there are
deleted paragraphs that you can't see, they could cause this behavior.

1. Make sure each level of numbering is firmly linked to a unique paragraph
style, as described at:
http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/numbering/outlinenumbering.html

2. In order to remove direct paragraph formatting (including numbering),
select the affected paragraphs and then press CTRL+Q.
