Outline Numbering while Merging

Any help you can give with this Word 2000 problem would be greatly
appreciated. My Main document which, using styles, has automatic
outline numbering (i.e. 1. A (i) (a) etc.). The merge worked
brilliantly except that the numbering on the merged documents continues
across all the documents instead of restarting with each new copy of the
main document. I've tried several things but can't seem to figure this
out. Any info that you can pass my way? Thanks again.

Probably, Margret Aldis's approach to restarting numbering is the best way
to go, here.

Set up an Outline numbered set of numbering. Level 1 should have NO
number. Level 2 restarts numbering after Level 1.

Assign this level 1 to the paragraph preceding the actual numbering.
