Outline Numbering

I am trying to format a document with outline numbering and am running into a
problem that I don't see addressed anywhere. I have followed the very helpful
link (http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/numbering/OutlineNumbering.html)
explaining how to format outline numbering but am still having problems. (As
far as I can tell I've followed the directions to the letter.)

Heading 1 and 2 numbers are fine, but when I get to Headings 3 and 4 they
format as follows:

Heading 1 - 5.0
Heading 2 - 5.1
Heading 3 - 5.1.1 to 5.2.1 then 5.3.1 etc. (only the 2nd number increases)
- What I want is for the last number to increase (5.1.1 then 5.1.2 then 5.1.3)
Heading 4 - 7.1.1.3 to 7.1.2.3 to 7.1.3.3 (only the 3rd number increases) -
Again, I want the last number to increase.

Any suggestions?

This usually results from having the number fields in the wrong order, which
is very difficult to troubleshoot in the Numbering dialog since they are all
displayed as 1s. Often the simplest solution in such instances is to
recreate them from scratch. For Level 3, delete everything in the "Number
format" box. Then click on Level 1 in the "Previous level number" box, add
any desired punctuation, then select Level 2, add punctuation, then select
1, 2, 3 in the "Number style box" and add any desired punctuation. For Level
4, do the same, adding Level 3 before the number of the current level.

That did the trick!

document has been giving me FITS and now it works like magic!

Glad you got it sorted. The fix is really simple once you see what the
problem is (which you often don't have enough data to figure out). What I
don't understand is how the problem gets created in the first place,
especially if you start with one of the standard numbering schemes.
