Outline Numbering

I imagine that this has been answered before and if it
has, I apologise.

Sorry this is a bit long winded but it is driving me mad.

I am editing some existing documents, most of which I did
not create. I have created a new template which contains
various styles. I am copying and pasting text from an
existing document and using the Styles task pane to
select various sections of the text and changing the
original style for a new one. Everything is working well
except for one aspect: in the original document there is
a style "Bulleted List" which uses a bulleted list with a
diamond. I am replacing this with a style "Instructions"
which uses Outline Numbering - putting a number at 0.5"
with indents of 1".

As expected, every bullet is changed for a number, I then
go through the document restarting the numbering in
several places. This works ok but when I then create a
master document and insert the new subdocuments the
numbering completely "goes to pot". I will have a
section numbered 1 to 4 and then the next section which
I "restarted" will be 5 to 10 instead of starting at 1
again.

I then have to go through the whole document again
restarting the numbering. But, it keeps happening and
with no consistency and I can't seem to find a pattern.
For example, if I close a document and re-open it the
numbering has all "gone again" but I will find 1, 4, 5,
6, 7 and not 1 to 7 etc.

I hope that this can be understood and that someone can
suggest a solution because it is driving me mad. I am
working on documents with between 120 and 160 pages and
there are lots of them.

Help!

Margaret, thank you very much for the solution. I only
wish I had asked sooner, it would have saved my hair from
going grey.

I have used the LISTNUM solution, inserting it as hidden
text at the end of each list and it is working great.

Thanks again.

Cris
