outline numbers scramble in Word 2003

I created my own Headings instead of using the preset outline numberings.
When I'm working on my outlines, the numbers and letters scramble out of
order, and not necessarily in sequence with the previous section with the
same heading. I have to go in manually to fix it all, but it sometimes just
rescrambles as soon as I hit CTRL+S or while I'm working on fixing a
different heading section. My friends have the same problem and there's no
virus on my computer. Is this a Word 2003 defect?
