Outline of table of contents complete with page numbers

Hello,
I have a table of contents that is designed in an outline using uppercase
letters,
arabic numbers, lower case letters, then lowercase Roman numerals. Each
item of which is followed by a series of dots to the end of the page which
ends with a page number.

Like this:
Chapter Title Page
A. First item ...................................... 1
1. Subtopic...................................... 2
2. Another subtopic.......................... 3
a. More subtopics............................ 4
i. More subtopics........................ 5
ii. More subtopics........................ 6
B. Second item.................................... 7

How would something like this be done in Word?

Hi Ellen,

What you're looking for is called a dot leader. Place your cursor where you
are going to tab and click on Format | Tabs and designate where you want your
tab to be and then sekect bynber two which is the dot leader. Press OK.
This should give you what you're looking for. I hope this has been helpful

Thanks, Carol for your timely response. I started an outline, but had to
space over to the right to get to where I want the page numbers. I did the
Format | Tab thing, but nothing seemed to happen. Do you what I'm missing?

Hi Ellen,

When you went to Format | Tabs, did you click clear all? I'm sorry that I
forgot to include that step. Once you have cleared all the tabs, type in
where you want your tab to be (e.g. 5.0) and then select number two wish is
the dot leader and click on set and ok. Please let me know if this works for
you.

Ellen, you might first want to Select All (ctrl-a)--the Format| Tabs
settings will only apply to the paragraph that the cursor is in, otherwise.

By the way, were you just concerned about the dot leader on the tabs, or did
you also hope to get Word to generate the outline numbers for you?

Thanks for your help Carol and Daiya. I'm making progress, but yes, I wanted
Word to generate the outline and for each item have dot leaders to the right
side of the page to a page number. Is that possible?

Instead of spacing, you must press the Tab key. Use a right-aligned tab for
the numbers and add a period leader to the tab setting. You might, however,
want to look at http://www.ShaunaKelly.com/word/toc/CreateATOC.html, which
explains how to make Word do all of this for you automatically.

The outline is very possible, but numbering in Word requires care....

Describe the complete situation that you are dealing with. Where is the TOC
coming from? Are you creating it from a Word document? Do you expect the TOC
to change? If you want the TOC to update itself and change numbers/letters
and page numbers as more stuff is added, then you want to use Word's
automatic features. If the TOC is not ever going to change, then you might
as well just type it.

The way this would normally happen, for documents that are going to change:

People would write the document first. They would set up the Headings (your
chapter title, first item, subtopic a, sub-subtopic b, etc) in the document
to use outline numbering, following the instructions here:

Then they would use Word to autogenerate the TOC (table of contents) from
the document, like so:

Default setting for a TOC includes the tab with dot leader. I think the TOC
would bring along the numbering from the headings.

Alternatively, if the TOC doesn't bring along the numbering from the
headings, or if the headings don't have numbering, they could add numbering
to the TOC itself. That could be done a couple of different ways.

how to use the dot leader. I'll study Shauna's instructions and I'm quite
sure I'll be able to create a magnificent outline.
