Outline Style

Hi Group,

I want to modify an outline style. I navigate thorough this sequence:
Choose style - modify, which leads to dialog box "Modify Style". I pick
format - numbering, which leads to dialog "Bullets and Numbering". I choose
one and choose customize, which leads to dialog "Customize Outline Numbered
List". OK.

I see level one number format is 1). The 1 is black with gray background
and the value increments automatically when the style is applied to
paragraphs. How is this created? I have a vague recollection that there
was a simple way to do this but the electronic documentation is much smaller
than before.

Thanks,

Thanks Stefan,

But how do you create the grey number if the number format textbox is blank
already?

In the Customize Outline Numbered List dialog box, click the desired
numbering level. Place the insertion point in the Number Format box,
and select a number style from the Number style box; it will display
greyed in the Number Format box. If you want trailing or leading text
with the number, just type it in the Number Format box.

Stefan, any suggestions. I am at a loss and Suzanne is too! (see thread
below)

All I can suggest is that you upgrade to Word 2002 or 2003, in which you can
use style separators, which I believe *do* preserve the numbering.

I tried but it does not work. It works like a charm if you have:
heading1 plus this text. You get
TOC: heading1.......

BUT it doesn't work at all if you have
1.1 heading1 plus this text. You get
TOC: 1.1 heading 1 plus this text.............
TOC: heading 1.........

yes, twice! Any other suggestions. I'm totally not able to use the
outline feature because of this and it is driving me crazy since legal docs.
often span dozens of pages and need revisions, inserts, resorts, etc.
Having to hard code the new numbers after every insert is a waste of time.
Help?????!
heading with text. However, it does not work for a heading with text that
is
part of an outline? Any other suggestions (I am using Word 2000).
