Outline Styles

I use outlines for sermon outlines. As I am 74 and retired I don't do much
preaching but I do occasionally. I am use to first line being roman
numerals. The first indent be .25" and uses A, B, C The Third indent is 1,
2, 3 My problem I set up styles hang 1, hang 2 and hand 3; I call them
hang because I hang the second line. My problem is in making my styles I
say automatic update and when I go to II How now brown cow and then the
indent under that doesn't start with A. but continues from the numbering
from hang 1. Then I go to a new letter under hang 2 then go to hang 3 it
does start over with 1 I hope you understand my problem.

See http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/numbering/OutlineNumbering.html for
help. If you start with the Outline Numbering gallery pane that uses the I,
A, 1 numbering, you will have a head start. You can either modify it so that
the levels are linked to your user-defined styles, or you can use the
built-in heading styles for your outline. If you do the latter, be aware
that heading styles are all formatted as "Keep with next," and you will need
to remove this formatting from all but the first couple of levels to keep
your outline from chasing itself from one page to the next.

Also be aware that the "Style for following paragraph" for heading styles is
Normal. If you are working in Outline view, I think this is overridden so
that you can get a new heading/outline style when you press Enter; in any
other view (unless you change the style definition), you will get a Normal
paragraph.

Also be aware that, in addition to using the Promote/Demote buttons in
Outline view, you can use the keyboard shortcuts Alt+Shift+Left/Right Arrow.
Additionally, you can use Tab and Shift+Tab to demote and promote if you
have the appropriate option enabled in Tools | Options | Edit or Tools |
AutoCorrect Options | Autoformat As You Type or Word Options | Proofing |
AutoCorrect Options | Autoformat As You Type.

Thanks I will check with the link.
I am using Office 2007 home and student edition and I cannot find "Keep with

Go to Home > Paragraph > Format (the tiny arrow at the lower right of
the box containing the Paragraph group) and click the second tab of
the panel that appears.

Ctrl-M should also still work for opening that panel.

The article in question is written for Word 2003 and earlier, but the
principles remain the same although the procedure is a little different. In
Word 2007, you have to use Define New Multilevel List both to "define" the
list and to modify it (you can't open this dialog directly from the Modify
Style dialog for your top-level numbered style); aside from that (and the
fact that the Define New Multilevel List dialog is arranged a little
differently from the Customize Outline Numbered List dialog), the procedure
is just the same.

Or to modify the relevant styles directly: Right-click the style name in the
Styles pane (Ctrl+Alt+Shift+S) and choose Modify from the context menu.
Click Format, Paragraph. "Keep with next" is on the Line and Page Breaks
tab.
