Outline sublevels not incrementing

G

Greg Reese

I have a document that is outlined. The top levels are
Chapter 1, Chapter 2, etc. The second levels of the first
chapter are 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, etc. This is okay. However,
in all the subsequent chapters the chapter number in the
second level stays at 1, e.g., for Chapter 2, the second
levels are 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, etc. instead of 2.1, 2.2, 2.3.
How can I correct this?

I made the outline from one of the built-in numbering
schemes. I'm using Word 2002 on Windows XP.

Thanks.

Hi Greg

See : How to create numbered headings or outline numbering in your Word Document
http://www.ShaunaKelly.com/word/numbering/OutlineNumbering.html

When you get to the Customize Outline Numbered List box, and you're doing Level 2, I suggest you delete everything in the Number
Format box, then choose Previous Level Number, and choose Level 1. Then, in the Number Format box, type "." (no quotes), then from
the Number style box, chose "1, 2, 3...".

And, make certain that, when you're doing Level 2, the box at "Restart Numbering After" is ticked and set to re-start after Level 1.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Shauna. By following your directions and messing
around a bit I got it to work. One question - when I'm
working on setting level two and I pick the dropdown
box "Previous Level Number" and it shows Level 1 as a
choice. When I select it, the box flashes, the number
format box changes correctly but the previous level
number box remains blank. Shouldn't it write "Level 1" in
that box, or does having it remain blank mean something?

Thanks again.

If I'm understanding you correctly, you may be misunderstanding the purpose
of the "Previous level number" box. It inserts the number from the previous
level(s) in the number of the current level. It does not affect the number
format of the previous level. This is for setting up by hand numbering such
as I.A.1 or 1.1.1, where each level picks up the numbering from the previous
level(s). If you've chosen a pane in the List Gallery that has that sort of
numbering (such as 1, 1.1, 1.1.1, etc.) to begin with, then you don't need
to fool with that setting.
