Outline symbols lost

I have lost the + & - level symbols in a Word 2000 document. Clicking on a
heading does expand/collapse the subordinate headings. Document Map is on
and everything else seems to work fine. What did I mess up and how can I
correct this?

maybe you want to switch to Outline View (View | ...)?

Thanks! I guess I was looking for a complex explanation when a super simple
one was in order.
