Outlining difficulties

I am having difficulty with outlining. It numbers 1, 2, 3 the way it
should, but when I hit tab to indent and go to a or i, it no longer
does it. It just makes the space. Here is a visual example to help
explain.

The way it should be:

1. I hate word
a. I hate it because it sucks

The way it is happening now, out of nowhere:

1. I hate word
2. I hate it because it sucks

The indent is no longer getting me to the next subset of letters/
markers for the outline, it is very frustrating. If anyone knows how
to completely reset it, that would be great.

A couple of points;

Make sure the box is checked for "Tabs & Backspaces set left indent" in the
AutoCorrect - AutoFormat As You Type Preferences. Otherwise, Automatic
Numbered Lists only provides 1 level.

Alternatively, use Format> Bullets & Numbering rather than relying on the
"automatic" feature in the first place.
