Outlining Tabs on Word 2003

When I am using outlining in Word and hit return and then tab, it gives puts
the next level numbering below at a prescribed tab set, which is further to
the right than I prefer. So, I would like to change this default tab stop
within outlining.

Is there a way to change the default tabs used in outlining withing MS Word
2003?
Thanks in advance,
Bob

This looks like exactly what I need. Thank you Stefan, (and indirectly
Shauna Kelly) for the help.

I believe I have followed the instructions in the website you gave corectly.
But something odd happens. If I stay in the same document where I made all
of the changes to the Heading styles, I can press Alt-Ctrl-1 and it will
apply Heading 1 style, or press Alt-Ctrl 2 and apply Heading style 2, etc.
This gives the numbering an all.

However, if I am in a new document and press Alt-Ctrl-1 it does NOT put any
numbering down at all.

What do I need to change?

Did you link the outline numbering to styles *and* save the modified styles
to the template?

When you modify the styles (using Format, Styles dialog) there's a check box
'Save to Template'. If you check that box before changing the styles, when
you save your document, you will be prompted to save changes to the template
xxx.dot at the same time.

Thanks Terry,

Now those styles are in my normal.dot template. I have read that it is a
good idea to keep your special macros and styles in another global template,
so that if you have to start over with a new normal.dot you do not lose all
of your customization. Can you tell me how to move these styles (and a
couple of new macros I just assigned) over to my BobGlobal.dot? Thank you.

Under Tools, Templates and Add-in, click on Organizer. The Organizer is used
to move custom macros, toolbars, styles and Auto Text between templates. So
create a new blank template and give it a memorable name. Then open
Organizer and select normal one side and the new template the other side.
You can now copy across the customization you want.

You can use this method to keep normal.dot slim and fast too by always
saving your customizations to a custom template. If you then place the
custom template in the Word Startup folder (see Tools, Options, File
Locations to either find the location or change the location of this
folder). In a business environment, the Startup folder is often placed on
the server and all users have the Startup path pointing to the server
location. Then company styles, AutoText, etc may be shared by all users.

Thanks Terry. That is all very helpful. I am just missing one thing. I
already have a global template, which is in the startup folder and is the
location I would like my newly customized macros and styles. But when I
click Organizer and seek to select BobGlobal.dot as the template into which
to copy styles and macros from normal.dot, I do not see BobGlobal.dot as an
option (only normal.dot and document 1). How can I get BobGlobal as an
option to copy these customizations to? Thanks again.

Also Terry,

In order to keep Normal.dot slim (as you mentioned below), should I delete
the customized styles and macros from the Normal.dot list after copying them
to the BobGlobal.dot list?

Oops. One more question, Terry. When I open Organizer and click the
Macro-project Items tab, I do not see any of my macros to copy from the
Normal.dot to another template. How can I fix that?
Thanks for help on all of these questions.

Close the Doc1 offering and the close button will change to an Open button.
Click on Open and navigate to the BobGlobal.dot and open it.

You won't see separate macros but only a project. Copy that across. If you
don't see one under normal.dot, maybe you saved them in a different template
already?

Thank you Terry for all of your answers. I have it all done now. I have
the new styles with some associated macros, they are in my personal global
template (rather than normal.dot), and normal.dot is now slim again. Thanks
again.

Thanks Terry. The New Macros Project was there. And I have now copied it
across (after first renaming the New Macros Project in my personal global
template to Old macros). Now I have all of the macros in the NewMacros
project in my personal global template. Thanks again.

Hi Bob

Yes, I saw that you got it all sorted. For some strange reason, the reply I
sent (along with the others) late last night was delayed somewhere en route.
