Outlook '03, can rcve but not send emails ??

This is my error message and I am running XP in a small office network that
does have Office and Outlook installed on their boxes and I do have the email
address in the acct correctly, and incoming works fine, but can't reply or
send..any ideas?
Task 'mail.comcast.net - Sending' reported error (0x800CCC78) : 'Unable to
send the message. Please verify the e-mail address in your account
properties. The server responded: 550 5.1.0 Authentication required'

The error is pretty explicit, and you aren't saying: Did you configure
Outlook to authenticate to the SMTP server? That error is saying that you
have not done that; but the server wants your UserID+Password.

I wonder if it's a comcast thing ? ? ? Although, I use a lap top and I can
send and receive from home with out a problem when I am away from home I
cannot send e-mail. I get the exact same error message when I try but as
soon as I go and get on our network they send. I know the STMP and POP3 are
correct. I know the e-mail addresses are correct. WHy do they not send when
I'm away? What ever you have going on there I have when I'm away. I am not a
computer person but woner if it maybe a firewall or security setting. If I
find out I will let you know asap. I am hoping to have some computer friends
help out Sunday or Monday.

Are you *on* Comcast's domain (i.e., on-domain) when you attempt to send
e-mail to their SMTP mail host? Or are you on someone else's network
(off-domain) when you try to use Comcast's SMTP mail host? E-mail
providers and ISP's usually don't care if you retrieve your e-mails from
off-domain but they definitely care if you attempt to send e-mails
through their domain while you are off-domain. When off-domain, they
don't know that you are authorized to use their resources, and they
don't want spammers hiding behind their domain (i.e., the spammer is
somewhere else but abusing Comcast's resources to spew their garbage).

Have you yet tried configuring the e-mail account that you defined in
Outlook so that Outlook authenticates to the SMTP mail host? If you did
but it is set to reuse the POP login credentials, select to specify
separate login credentials (and just reenter the ones you use for their
POP mail host).

Also, like many ISPs trying to thwart customer hosts that are infected
with a mailer trojan that typically spew out through port 25, Comcast is
changing to port 587 (for non-SSL connects; for SSL, use port 465). So
try changing to port 587 for SMTP (outbound). Comcast will also block
traffic over port 25 from their customers that they determine have been
violating anti-spam or anti-abuse quotas for *personal* e-mail accounts.
In that case, try port 587 (or 465 with SSL). If it still fails,
contact Comcast to ask why they terminated your sending privileges.

If you are connecting to 'smtp.comcast.net' from a non-Comcast IP
connection, there are other factors than Comcast to consider.

Does the network you are using allow outbound port 25 connections? Mine does
not, unless the customer requests that it be allowed (I have, and I can send
through 'smtp.comcast.net:25' from my AT&T Internet connection, when I have
a current Comcast UserID+Password).

If the network blocks outbound port 25 connections to message submission
servers (such as 'smtp.comcast.net') except their own, you have to configure
your client for either port 587, or port 465 with SSL.

The error pretty much explains it. You must authenticate to the outgoing
server. Does the domain of the sender address you're using match the domain
of the SMTP server?

OK, I think I understand the change the port idea...only question is where do
I go to do that? I usually only work in the Outlook, Email Acct, Properties
type screens and I think this port stuff is somewhere else ?? I will go
looking for where I can set the port and see IF I can find it. Makes sense
that this little office network has some controls on how this stuff
works...would have never figured the outgoing port thing was possibly the
issue..thanks NM...will let ya know if this works, IFFF I can find where to
change the ports.

Not sure where to check the domain server stuff?? I did find where to change
the ports and tried both ports with and without SSL...port 465 w and w/o ,
and 587 w/o all gave a new error saying>>>> found the server, but no response
from the server, and check the port number and the SSL setting, and told you
how to get there....port 587 w SSl error message said >>> could not logon to
outgoing mail server (SMTP), problem c/b server name, may require
authentication, or may not support SSL...veryify authen and SSL under More
Settings. So, still not able to send. Is it possible that they just have the
ports closed and will not allow Outlook, Comcast type mail out ? I can do
Comcast web mail fine, but I just wanted to be able to use Outlook for the
other features...thanks again.

I called comcast and it was a SIMPLE fix. Go into your settings I think
advanced settings, don't remember, and click the button that says save all
emails on the server. I did this and have not had a problem since. I hope
yours is just as simple and good luck

It's there. Tools>E-mail Accounts>Next. Select the account. Click Change,
then More Settings, then select the Advanced tab.

I found the save on the server box Andi and checked it...still not working.
Any other ideas as to why the various port and SSL settings will still not
allow me to send Outlook/Comcast emails out? Thanks all...
